Kaizer Chiefs Keeper Faces Foggy Future
Brandon Petersen’s future with Kaizer Chiefs appears uncertain as there has been no word from the club regarding a contract renewal.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been enjoying consistent game time since replacing Itumeleng Khune as the Glamour Boys’ prime goal-stopper, after leaving Bidvest Wits to sign up with the club in 2021 on a two-year deal. He has made 21 appearances across all tournaments and earned nine clean sheets during that time.
However, contract negotiations behind the scenes have apparently ground to a halt, according to Petersen’s agent, Lance Davids.
Davids spoke to a local football publication on Tuesday, 13 June, regarding the contract talks. He commented that he was unaware that Chiefs have not yet pushed for an extension for the upcoming season, despite Petersen having a fantastic 2022/23 campaign and showing superb skills that secured his spot on boss Arthur Zwane’s A-squad.
“Holding off from a contract is new to me. Yes, he has six months left.”, Davids said, while explaining that his client will have his pick of signing a pre-contract with any club that headhunts him once January 2024 rolls around.
No one can predict how the talks will pan out, but until then, Petersen’s 1.85-metre frame will most likely be joining his team mates for their pre-season training at the end of the month.
